Election Commission announces Union Parishad polls will be held in 7 phases starting November 12, with voting in approximately 80 upazilas including areas of Naogaon district in the first phase.
The Election Commission has announced that Union Parishad elections will be held across Bangladesh in seven phases, with the first phase scheduled for November 12, 2026. The second phase of voting will take place on December 13.
According to Election Commissioner Sanaullah, voting in the first phase will be held in Union Parishads of around 80 upazilas across 63 districts, excluding Thakurgaon where a by-election is currently underway. Priority will be given to district Sadar upazilas, and districts with larger numbers of upazilas will have multiple areas included in the first phase.
The Commission aims to complete elections in most Union Parishads within the first five phases. As part of preparations, an inter-ministerial meeting has been scheduled for September 17 and a law-and-order meeting for September 21. The EC plans to install closed-circuit television cameras, drones, and body-worn cameras at all polling centres to monitor the elections.
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar stated that work on the action plan is moving ahead at a rapid pace, and a code of conduct has already been finalized with several new provisions. Union Parishad elections are crucial at the local level, allowing residents to choose representatives responsible for local development and community issues.
