Government will begin phased local government elections starting September-October 2026, with union parishad polls expected first, LGRD State Minister announced.

The government has announced plans to conduct local government elections across Bangladesh in a phased manner beginning this September or October, following the conclusion of the monsoon season. Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) State Minister Mir Shahe Alam made the announcement while speaking to journalists in Bogura.

According to the state minister, elections to five tiers of local government bodies will be completed within the next year. Union parishad elections are expected to be held first, followed by other local bodies that require larger budget allocations. The sequencing of polls will depend on available funding, with elections to 13 city corporations, including the newly formed Bogura City Corporation, also planned within the same timeframe.

State Minister Shahe Alam noted that financial planning is currently underway, as conducting local government elections requires significant funding. The Local Government Division, the Election Commission, and the Ministry of Finance will hold further discussions after the national budget is approved and the new fiscal year begins to finalize the election schedule.

This announcement is particularly significant for Atrai Upazila and other areas across the country, as local government elections will determine leadership at the union parishad and upazila levels. These elected bodies play crucial roles in delivering government services, implementing development projects, and addressing local needs at the grassroots level.
