Bangladesh's measles outbreak has claimed 849 lives and infected over 131,000 people as of early August, making it the world's largest current measles outbreak.

Bangladesh's measles outbreak continues to claim lives across all eight divisions of the country, with the Directorate General of Health Services reporting at least 849 deaths from confirmed and suspected measles and 131,946 suspected cases as of August 4, 2026. Of these, 16,531 cases have been laboratory confirmed, making this the world's largest measles outbreak by case count.

The outbreak, which began in mid-March 2026, has affected 58 out of 64 districts nationwide, including areas in Rajshahi Division. The majority of cases—79 percent—are children under five years of age. Health experts attribute the surge to gaps in vaccination coverage and widespread malnutrition among vulnerable populations.

In response to the crisis, the government launched an emergency mass vaccination campaign starting April 5, targeting children aged 6 months to 5 years, with the age range extended to 10 years in high-risk districts. The campaign aims to vaccinate up to 1.2 million children. Authorities have also strengthened hospital preparedness, surveillance systems, and infection prevention measures.

Health officials urge parents in Atrai Upazila and throughout Naogaon district to ensure their children receive measles vaccinations promptly. Warning signs of measles include fever, rash, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Parents should seek immediate medical attention if children show these symptoms, as early treatment can prevent serious complications and death.
