Meteorological Department warns of potential flooding in northern regions this July as heavy rainfall forecast for Rangpur division and river levels rise.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning of potential short-term flooding in northern regions of the country this July, despite expecting normal overall rainfall throughout the month. The forecast is particularly relevant to residents of Rajshahi Division, including Naogaon District and Atrai Upazila.
According to the department's long-range weather forecast bulletin released earlier this month, heavy rainfall could trigger flood situations in the northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been specifically forecast for Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions over the coming days, raising concerns about fresh flooding in vulnerable areas.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has reported that major rivers across the country are expected to see rising water levels this month. The centre warns that Bangladesh remains particularly vulnerable to flooding in July and August due to heavy precipitation in upper catchment areas of major river basins. Currently, low-lying areas of the Brahmaputra basin are experiencing flooding, with water levels expected to stabilize within five to six days.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and prepared. The meteorological department has indicated that one to two low-pressure systems may form in the Bay of Bengal during July, one of which could develop into a monsoon depression, potentially bringing additional rainfall to the region.
